Tiger Population Grows as 22 Cubs Spotted in Pilibhit Tiger Reserve

Forest officials have reported the sighting of 20–22 tiger cubs across the Pilibhit Tiger Reserve over the last seven months, highlighting healthy breeding activity and the success of ongoing conservation efforts. The reserve currently has 79 officially recorded adult tigers, while cubs are not included in the formal tiger census.

According to forest authorities, the cub sightings have been recorded in various parts of the reserve since the beginning of the tourism season. Chief Conservator of Forests PP Singh stated that although tiger cubs are excluded from official population estimates, forest staff and safari guides have consistently observed between 20 and 22 cubs across different ranges. Officials believe that all of these cubs are less than one year old.

Between November 1, 2025, and June 30, 2026, several tigresses were regularly seen with their cubs in the Mahof, Barahi, Chuka, Mala, Deoria, and Haripur ranges. Among the most frequently observed were the tigress Naina in the Mahof range and another tigress in the Barahi range, each accompanied by three cubs.

The Chuka and Bhimtal areas also witnessed repeated tiger cub sightings, becoming major attractions for wildlife enthusiasts and safari visitors. In one memorable incident, two cubs were seen climbing a tree near the Chuka picnic spot, with photographs and videos of the rare behaviour quickly going viral on social media.

Another exciting encounter occurred earlier in the tourism season when a tiger cub unexpectedly ran toward a safari vehicle, thrilling visitors while reminding them of the unpredictable nature of the wild. In May, authorities temporarily suspended bookings at the Chuka tree huts after two cubs were found resting beneath the accommodation, prompting precautionary measures to ensure the safety of both tourists and wildlife.

Safari guides have additionally reported evidence of 11 cubs in the Barahi and Mahof ranges, along with another 11 cubs in the Mala, Deoria, and Haripur ranges, further indicating widespread breeding activity throughout the reserve.

Wildlife experts note that tiger cubs generally become independent and establish their own territories at around two-and-a-half years of age, making their first few years crucial for survival. While the most recent tiger estimation recorded 79 adult tigers in the reserve, cubs remain excluded from the official census figures.

Forest officials believe the increasing number of tiger cub sightings is a strong indicator of successful breeding and effective conservation management in the Pilibhit Tiger Reserve. They also say the growing tiger population is enhancing the reserve’s reputation as one of India’s emerging wildlife tourism destinations.
